Free pattern Amigurumi Origami Crane

Do you want to crochet an amigurumi origami crane?

Origami has always been one of my favorite hobby’s. And I always wanted two combine Origami and Crochet. And yes now I’ve finally done it an amigurumi origami crane! In June 2017 I was challenged by a good friend of mine: Jocelijne to try and crochet a micro crochet origami crane. I couldn’t resist this fun challenge, so after a couple of weeks of trying I’ve finally mastered it.

Because #origami was my first craft addiction @jocelijne challenged me to make a micro crochet Crane in origami style. Challenge accepted and completed! Whoop whoop!! #dendennis #origami #origamicrane #crochet #microcrochet #haken #craft #durableyarn #embroideryyarn #challenge #origamitocrochet

I’ve also decided to publish this pattern in my book: Haken met Dendennis – Geluk & Vriendjes; literally translated: Crochet with Dendennis – Luck and friends. For me folding cranes is a feeling of luck. I’ve folded so many cranes in lots of different sizes and I always left them behind in public places as a gift for others. I love the idea of surprising people with small gifts. And now I can also surprise every crochet fan with this free Amigurumi Origami Crane.

Enjoy the pattern!

It’s not like real origami, so you don’t start with a flat square and fold it. I’ve looked at a finished origami crane, and crocheted the shapes which I later sewed together.

For crochet instructions I recommend PlanetJune on youtube. Her online tutorials are very easy to learn

Abbreviations
Rnd = Round
sc = Single crochet
dec = Use the invisible decrease, insert your hook into the front loops of the next two stitches, yarn over draw through the first two loops, yarn over through the remaining two stitches
inc = 2 sc in next stitch

Tail and head 2x

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring
Rnd 2-3: 6 sc (6)
Rnd 4: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (9)
Rnd 5-6: 9 sc (9)
Rnd 7: [2 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (12)
Rnd 8-9: 12 sc (12)
Rnd 10: [3 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (15)
Rnd 11-12: 15 sc (15)
Rnd 13: [4 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (18)
Rnd 14-15: 18 sc (18)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Close the opening and fold the shape. Using your yarn needle to sew the shape as in the picture below. This will be the shape of the tail.
For the second shape of the head: Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Close the opening and fold the shape. Using your yarn needle to sew the shape as in the picture below. make an extra valley fold in the upper half to shape the head. After you’ve sewn the shape at the bottom you place your needle through the inside of the shape and get it out where the valley fold of the head will be. and sew the fold of the head as in the pictures below.
Place the shape of the head and tail with their backs together and sew them together in the last two rounds.

Center piece

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring
Rnd 2: [1 inc] x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: [1 dec] x 6 (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Close the opening and sew the centrepiece in the middle of the head and tail.

Wings 2x

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring
Rnd 2: 6 sc (6)
Rnd 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (9)
Rnd 4: 9 sc (9)
Rnd 5: [2 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (12)
Rnd 6: 12 sc (12)
Rnd 7: [3 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (15)
Rnd 8: 15 sc (15)
Rnd 9: [4 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (18)
Rnd 10: 18 sc (18)
Rnd 11: [5 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (21)
Rnd 12: 21 sc (21)
Rnd 13: [6 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (24)
Rnd 14: 24 sc (24)
Rnd 15: [6 sc, 1 dec] x 3 (21)
Rnd 16: [5 sc, 1 dec] x 3 (18)
Rnd 17: 18 sc (18)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Close the opening. First sew one wing to one side as shown in the picture. Afterwards you can sew the final wing. This will be difficult because you have to put your needle between lots of layers. But it is doable. Good luck!
